Can Newborns Use Baby Wipes?

Published: 07/31/2024

When caring for your sweet newborn, every little detail matters, including which wipes to use. So, can newborns use baby wipes? Yes, they can, but there are some tips you should know before you do, so let’s talk about it!

Choose the right type of baby wipe.

For your delicate newborn, select wipes that are labeled "gentle" or "sensitive" for a tender touch that’s free from harsh chemicals, fragrances, and potential irritants.

Though baby wipe science has come a long way over the years, keep in mind “not all products are made the same,” as the researchers in the Journal Pediatric Dermatology remind us. “Differences exist in manufacturing processes, ingredients, materials, safety, and quality testing,” which is why it’s a good idea to Google any ingredients that are unfamiliar to you.

If you’re looking for a wipe that’s developed with the most sensitive skin in mind, we're here to help.

Newborn-safe Hello Bello baby wipes are crafted with over 99% water, infused with soothing natural aloe and chamomile.

Free from alcohol, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and artificial dyes, you’re assured a gentle experience for your family’s new V.I.P.

Plus, these fan-favorite wipes are conveniently available through our diapers subscription, saving you worry, time, and money.

Too much of anything is a bad thing— use baby wipes in moderation.

Remember:

  • For Girls: Always wipe from front to back to prevent bacterial transfer. Clean the folds between the thighs and bum with a fresh wipe.

  • For Boys: First clean the penis and then move to the testicles. With a fresh wipe, address the skin folds between the thighs, and finally, the bum.

When you’re done, dispose of the wipes in a diaper pail. (Never flush!)

Here’s a secret many new parents don’t know — you don’t need baby wipes as often as you’d think! With today’s superabsorbent diapers, pee rarely contacts your baby’s skin, so you only really need a wipe for #2s.

If you prefer, or if you see redness, use a baby wipe alternative.

While diaper wipes are generally safe for newborns, exceptions arise if your baby develops redness, indicating sensitivity.

If redness occurs, consider an alternative to baby wipes, such as:

  • A cotton ball or square dipped in warm water, which cleanses gently without wiping.
  • Mild soap cleanser and water in the sink or tub — ideal for messier diapers followed by a clean towel or soft cloth to pat dry and a diaper ointment.
  • Leave your baby’s bottom bare to let the skin breathe and air dry if possible.

If you are using alternative methods because your baby has a diaper rash, you can expect the rash to resolve within 2 to 3 days. You can and should also use a soothing diaper rash cream to help heal the rash faster and comfort your baby’s skin.

When in doubt, talk to your pediatrician.

If you’ve tried different brands of alcohol-free and unscented varieties and irritation persists or seemingly worsens, consult your pediatrician. They're your trusted guide for all baby health and well-being matters.

But in a nutshell: yes, newborns can safely use baby wipes — provided you choose the brand wisely and use them gently and only when needed. And if you want to go au-naturale, that’s perfectly fine too. Every parent has their own preferences, so choose whatever is best for you and your baby.
